We have all heard of and grown to love the Swan Valley and its well-known staples like Sandalford, Mandoon and Margaret River Chocolate Factory, but there is a much lesser known hidden gem in the Perth Hills Wine Region that is growing in popularity by the day. Bickley Valley is the PERFECT Perth day out, anytime of the year!
The Bickley Valley in Carmel is a sub region of the Perth Hills Wine Region which extends from Chittering to Jarrahdale. It is a glorious mix of stunning views over elevated rolling green hills, boutique vineyards and cider houses, delightful cafes and restaurants, and local art and craft displays, just to mention a few. And it is just a 30 minute drive from Perth city.
The Bickley Valley Wine Region has been recognised as having a unique set of geographical and topographical influences which affect the quality of the wine produced in this region. It has been likened to the vineyards of inland areas of Spain and Portugal, where the climate is much more continental rather than Mediterranean. The elevated (300m above sea level) undulating terrain and high valley walls results in decreased total hours of direct sunlight, making this region perfect to grow some unique wine varieties: Verdelho, Mourvedre and Touriga (these can be sampled at Myattsfield Winery).
So what else makes the Bickley Valley so unique compared to the Swan Valley?
Well firstly, the scenery is simply breathtaking, with stunning rolling hillsides covered in vineyards and colourful orchards, streams and forest.
You cannot beat the welcoming country charm of Western Australia with its yesteryear architecture & bespoke cellar doors.
Unlike the Swan Valley, all the venues are in close proximity to each other, making it easier to get around and more time spent trying the local food and drink.
And finally, the cellar doors are owned and operated by local, young and passionate winemakers creating award-winning wines and ciders.
So here is a selection of the best venues (and some incentives for visiting!!) from the Bickley Valley Wine Region:
Try the wines at Myattsfield (definitely my favourite), Plume, Fairbrossen and Hainault (just to name a few) and the cider at the Core Cider house.
Appreciate the local artwork showcased at many of the venues – including some of my own landscape photography prints on display at Myattsfield Vineyards.
Immerse yourself in the Kalamunda Village Markets (held the first Saturday of every month) exploring hand-made crafts and tasty local produce.
Check out the food at: The Packing Shed @ Lawnbrook, The Vineyard Kitchen, Hainult and Mason & Bird or grab some cheese and crackers from Myattsfield & enjoy a picnic in their gorgeous grounds.
Enjoy a wonder around the stunning gardens of Masonmill Gardens & Café.
Go for a hike along the Bibbluman Track in Kalamunda National Park.
So a bit of a confession is coming up here… the main purpose of this article was to enrich your knowledge of what is a really cool and unique place to visit for a day trip in Perth, sharing with you some of the many fabulous local businesses that I have explored and that will send you into food and drink heaven. But I also wanted to share a little personal plug regarding my involvement in a landscape photography exhibition that I was asked to develop for Myattsfield Vineyards.
You see, the great thing about locals working in their own businesses, is that we love to support other local businesses! So when I was asked if I would be interested in displaying some of my landscape prints at the Myattsfield Vineyards cellar door, I couldn’t pass the opportunity of sharing my photography with wine lovers and the like. The way I see it, I love wine and I love photography, surely I am not the only one?
My exhibition will be on display from August, so take the opportunity to make a day trip out to the Bickley Valley and pop in to check out the wines and the landscape prints at Myattsfield Vineyards as you pass through. And of course, go and explore all the other cool places I mentioned earlier.
All in all, the Bickley Valley offers an exciting new alternative to the now very mainstream Swan valley, with a whole set of new experiences to enjoy for a perfect Perth Day Out. Get out there and find out for yourself!
